MARBLE HILL -- Helen N. Carter, 95, of Marble Hill, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 1996, at Bond Nursing Care Center.

Carter was born May 10, 1900.

She was the first African American to graduate from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast in 1956, and earned at least five other degrees.

Carter began teaching in Cape Girardeau in 1923, which included seventh and eighth grades and drama.

There are no survivors.

There is no visitation or service.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau was in charge of arrangements.
