She was born in Kentucky, and moved to Missouri at an early age. She was a graduate of Sikeston High School and William Jewell College, and attended Will Mayfield College.

Jennings taught school at Oran, Scott City, and Cape Girardeau, retiring in 1973. She moved to California in 1977.
