CHARLESTON -- Funeral service for Harry W.J. Herwig of Charleston will be held at 1 p.m. today at McMikle Funeral Chapel in Charleston. The Revs. William Summers and Loren Deal will officiate, with burial in IOOF Cemetery.
Herwig, 74, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 1995, at his home.
He was born Aug. 15, 1920, in St. Louis, son of Harry and Katherine Wuhrman Herwig Sr. He and Helen Council were married Sept. 20, 1946.
Herwig retired as a carrier with Charleston Post Office in 1974. He was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church and Charleston VFW Post 4294, and a member of Disabled American Veterans. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Five Oak Leaf Cluster and Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Delores Capello of Midlothian Texas, Harriet Small and Kathleen Richardson of Charleston, Katherine Leffler of Paducah, Ky.; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a stepbrother.
