CAIRO, Ill. -- Harry "Jack" Bauer, 98, of Cairo died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Miller City, Illinois, to Carl and Novella Simpson Bauer. He married Margaret Denton on Dec. 24, 1942. She survives.
Jack was co-owner of Bauer Brothers Oil Co. He served three terms as Alexander County commissioner. He was a member of Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church in Cairo and served his church and community in many ways. He loved his family, especially his childhood sweetheart who became his wife of almost 74 years. He enjoyed fishing in his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Bauer of Cairo; one son, Dickie Bauer (Denise) of South Fulton, Tennessee; one daughter, Carla Bauer (David Fell) of Centralia, Illinois; two grandchildren, Casey Dixon and Mark Bauer; one great-grandson, Gavin Dixon; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl and Carl Bauer; and two sisters, Fleecy Yates and Mazie Crozier.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service Monday at Crain Funeral Home in Cairo.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Doug Atkins officiating. Interment will be at Beechwood Cemetery in Mounds, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
