Harriet Elizabeth Colman Shorb, 83, formerly of Munster, Ind., passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2011, in Littleton, Colo., at the home of her oldest son.
She was born Nov. 1, 1927, in Shreveport, La., daughter of William H. and Geraldine Harper Colman. She and Eugene Murray Shorb were married July 14, 1951, in Cape Girardeau.
Harriet grew up in the Missouri towns of Farmington, Jackson and Cape Girardeau. She graduated from Cape Girardeau Central High School, and Southeast Missouri State University in 1949.
She began teaching in northwest Indiana. She taught at St. Thomas More School in Munster 17 years and was very active in her community. She was on the board of the Samaritan Counseling Center, member of Woodmar United Methodist Church, Chapter CJ of PEO Sisterhood and Visiting Nurse Foundation, at one time serving as president.
Harriet's core belief was that we are here on Earth to create and develop relationships with people. Her daily life was a testament to acceptance, unconditional love and tolerance. She remains an inspiration to those fortunate to be part of her legacy of love.
Loving survivors include two sons, Thomas (Gena) Shorb of Katy, Texas, William (Lisa) Shorb of Littleton; a son-in-law, Hartmut Delmas of Hamberg, Germany; six grandchildren, Nathaniel and Matthew Shorb of Katy, Sarah and Marian Shorb of Littleton, Rebecca and Kai Delmas of Hamberg; a brother, William (Evelyn) Colman of Jackson; a sister, Geraldine Dudley of St. Louis; a brother-in-law, William Shorb of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, and a daughter, Janet Delmas, in 2010.
Harriet will be privately interred next to her husband in Indiana.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 1 p.m. June 18 at Woodmar United Methodist Church in Hammond, Ind.
