MOUNDS, Ill. -- Harold D. Hargan, 77, of Mounds died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 19, 1931, in rural Mounds, son of Loal Alfred and Lora Johnson Hargan Sr. He and Doris Ikola were married July 8, 1955, at Mound City, Ill.

Hargan was a union steward 40 years at the USEC Plant at Paducah, Ky. He was a chairman and former Pulaski County commissioner 10 years, and former member of Meridian School Board in Mounds.

He was a member and trustee of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mound City; member of Knights of Columbus in Paducah; was a Kentucky colonel; member of American Legion Post 178 at Villa Ridge, Ill.; lifetime member, past commander and member of ritual team of Pulaski County VFW Post 8891 in Mounds. He was a graduate of Mounds Township High School.

Hargan was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sandy Stricker of Karnak, Ill., Jo Deanne Hargan of Paducah, Lori Hall of Fort Worth, Texas; a son, Eric Hargan of Chicago; a sister, LaVerne Brown of Benton, Ky.; three brothers, Wayne Hargan of Johnston City, Ill., Robert Hargan of Nashville, Ill., Virgil Hargan of Metropolis, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a brother and a sister.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Church.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with Monsignors Bill McGhee and Jerome Hartlein officiating. Burial will be in Mound City National Cemetery with military honors presented by VFW Post 8891, Cairo VFW post 2649 and American Legion Post 178.

Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
