BENTON, Mo. -- Gregory B. Scherer, 90, of Benton died Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Benton to Victor and Pauline Welter Scherer. He married Mary Louise Scherer on Aug. 27, 1955, and she preceded him in death June 20, 1995. He later married Georgia Guinn Grady on April 25, 1998, and she preceded him in death March 7, 2019...

BENTON, Mo. -- Gregory B. Scherer, 90, of Benton died Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Benton to Victor and Pauline Welter Scherer. He married Mary Louise Scherer on Aug. 27, 1955, and she preceded him in death June 20, 1995. He later married Georgia Guinn Grady on April 25, 1998, and she preceded him in death March 7, 2019.

He was an electrician and dispatcher for Ameren. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Benton and Knights of Columbus Council 6420 in Scott City.

He is survived by his sons, Joe (Lauren) Scherer of Pacific, Missouri, Glenn Scherer of St. Louis and Tim (Michelle) Scherer of Scott City; daughters, Rosanne (David) Elsey of Sikeston, Missouri, Karen Scherer of Nashville, Tennessee, Mary Beth (Fred) Glastetter of Oran, Missouri, Laura Scherer of Benton and Kristy (Steve) Allgeyer of St. Louis; sisters, Geneva Dirnberger of Benton and Wilma Martin of Advance, Missouri; 18 grandchildren; and three-great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; sons, Greg and Gerard; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Denis Catholic Church.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Bala Swamy Govindu as celebrant. Burial, with full military honors, will be in the church cemetery.

St. Denis Parish has requested visitation and funeral Mass for immediate family only.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Denis School or Alzheimer's Association at www.act.alz.org.
