Glenn Erwin Kroenung, 84, of Cape Girardeau passed away at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Mercy Hospital Southeast in Cape Girardeau with his family by his side.

He was born June 12, 1940, in St. Louis to Erwin and Irma Albrecht Kroenung. He married Barbara Brockmeier on May 13, 1961, in Creve Coeur, and she survives. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage.

Glenn grew up on Long Road in Gumbo, now known as the Chesterfield Valley. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1957. He briefly served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He spent most of his career in the grocery business. In 1976, he and his family relocated to Cape Girardeau to be part of the team to open the Cape Girardeau Schnucks store. He was the store’s first produce manager. Later, he worked for the Storey family as a store manager of the Sikeston Piggly Wiggly, followed by managing three Food Giant locations in Cape Girardeau.

Glenn found great pride in running a clean and efficient grocery store with friendly employees. Aside from the daily operations, he was a master at building displays and writing weekly grocery ads. Glenn retired from Bob’s Foodliner in Scott City in 2001. Post retirement, Glenn worked as a part-time starter at Dalhousie Golf Club. He never considered his golf course job as “work". He found great joy in greeting members, handing out Moon Pies and playing golf after hours.

Glenn’s hobbies included playing golf; spending winters at the beach in Naples, Florida; assembling jigsaw puzzles; and going on family vacations. Glenn was a long-time member of Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge No. 639 and Kimbeland Golf Club. He was a lifetime St. Louis Cardinals fan. In his younger years, when Glenn wasn’t playing softball or bowling, he coached many of his children’s sports teams.
