SCOTT CITY -- Gladys Sue Smith, daughter of the late Leslie and Neta Peetz Raines, was born Aug. 26, 1942, in Cape Girardeau and departed her life Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, surrounded by family at her home at the age of 80 years.
Gladys was a lifelong member of Eisleben Lutheran Church in Scott City, where she served as the church secretary for many years and was the unofficial church historian. She was also a Girl Scouts leader and active in many community groups and clubs.
On April 7, 1963, she married John Z. Smith. He preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 2011.
She is survived by one son, John (Rhonda) Smith of Scott City; two daughters:, Leslie (Greg) Kriete of Columbia, Missouri, and Anita Smith of Scott City; three grandsons, Connor Kriete, Dalton Smith and Carson Smith; and her furry companion, Zoey.
Apart from her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Getz, and two brothers, Wilford Raines and Marvin Raines.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Eisleben Lutheran Church in Scott City, with Pastor Barry Pfanstiel officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In-lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Eisleben Lutheran Church, 432 Lutheran Lane, Scott City, Missouri 63780.
