LEOPOLD, Mo. -- Gladys Kathleen Nenninger, 93, of Leopold entered into eternal life Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, surrounded by family at Woodland Hills in Marble Hill, Mo.

Born on Dec. 25, 1919, in Drum, Mo., she was the daughter of Freeman Charles and Nellie Columbia Mabrey Markham.

On May 14, 1938, she married Elmer Vincent Nenninger at Leopold. They enjoyed 49 years together, working and raising a family, before Elmer's death Oct. 28, 1987.

For more than 25 years, Gladys worked as the assistant postmaster at Leopold. She was an active member of St. John Catholic Church and was an organizing member of the Legion of Mary and the Junior Legion of Mary; a member of the parish St. Ann's Ladies Sodality and was selected by the group as the Catholic Woman of the Year in 1986. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Marble Hill. She was custodian of Wayne Cemetery Association for 30 years and a care giver at El Nathan. Gladys loved many things in her life, including private care giving, writing poetry, playing guitar, writing letters, baking bread and … yes ... she loved those cats!

She is survived by four children: Marilyn Jansen Whitener of Leopold, Clem (Sandy) Nenninger of Maplewood, Mo., Joan Nenninger Pettit of Jackson and John David (Carolyn) Nenninger of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia; infant twins; a brother; and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hutchings Funeral Chapel in Marble Hill.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Johns Church in Leopold, with the Rev. William Hennecke as Mass celebrant. Burial will be at St. Johns Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wayne Cemetery Association.
