Gladys Ann Hughes, 85, of Cape Girardeau passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. She was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Craighead County, Arkansas, daughter of Cecil I. and Genevieve Shook Daugherty. She and R.T. Hughes were married Jan. 16, 1942, in Hernando, Miss. Gladys Ann Hughes, 85, of Cape Girardeau passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Craighead County, Arkansas, daughter of Cecil I. and Genevieve Shook Daugherty. She and R.T. Hughes were married Jan. 16, 1942, in Hernando, Miss. He preceded her in death.

Gladys worked 12 years in the obstetrical unit at St. Francis Medical Center. After retirement, she volunteered at Southeast Missouri Hospital. She was a member of Cape Bible Chapel, PEO Chapter EY in Scott City and Cape Girardeau Quest Club.

Loving survivors include her daughter, Marsha Kay Lee of St. Thomas; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Ken Blanchard of Jonesboro, Ark., Linda and Jim Zirkle of Spring, Texas; nephews, Ken Blanchard Jr., David Blanchard, Bryan and Steve Zirkle, Rick Eason; nieces, Garnet Rose Huighe and Susan Eason; dear friends, Charles and June Thurman, Judy McBride, all of Cape Girardeau; several other nieces and nephews; and many caring friends at Cape Bible Chapel.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John C. and Jack L. Daugherty; and a sister, Betty Eason.

Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau with Hal Greene officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Cape Bible Chapel Building Fund, the Lutheran Home, American Cancer Society or Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation.
