THEBES, Ill. -- Funeral service for Gladys A. Drewes of Garden Prairie was held May 7 at Davis United Methodist Church near Garden Prairie. The Rev. Richard C. Wisdom officiated, with burial in Shattuck Grove Cemetery near Garden Prairie.

Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Drewes, 99, died Sunday, May 4, 1997, at her home, following a brief illness.

She was born May 28, 1897, at Thebes, daughter of James and Emma King Brown. She and Charles T. Drewes were married June 10, 1929, at Jonesboro.

Drewes was a 1915 graduate of Thebes High School, and received an associate's degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

She previously resided in Southern Illinois where she was an elementary teacher many years. She was a member of Davis United Methodist Church in Herbert and its United Methodist Women; Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and Highland Hospital Auxiliary.

Drewes had lived at Garden Prairie 20 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Munson of San Jose, Calif.; a son, Charles Drewes of Garden Prairie; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, and three brothers.
