Virginia Dorothy "Ginny" Thornton, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center. She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in St. Louis, daughter of Earl and Marguerite Minnigerode Drake. She and Luther Eugene Thornton were married Aug. 31, 1940. He died Aug. 24, 1992...

Virginia Dorothy "Ginny" Thornton, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in St. Louis, daughter of Earl and Marguerite Minnigerode Drake. She and Luther Eugene Thornton were married Aug. 31, 1940. He died Aug. 24, 1992.

Thornton moved to Cape Girardeau in 1954 from St. Louis. She had worked at Libson Shop, Children's Bazaar, and was employed in the accounting department at Concord Publishing/ Bulletin-Journal Newspaper nine years.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 3838.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Rick and Sue Thornton of Sugar Grove, Ill., Barry Thornton of Cape Girardeau; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Tom Halupnik of Memphis, Tenn., Debbie and Eddie Crenshaw of Walls, Miss.; a sister, Elizabeth Heckenberg of St. Louis; six grandchildren, Drew Thornton, Christopher Thornton, Patrick Thornton, Brad Halupnik, Brent Crenshaw and Cameron Crenshaw.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and three sisters.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 5-8 p.m. today.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with the Rev. Paul Kabo Jr. officiating. Private burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Arthritis Foundation, or First Presbyterian Church.
