George Thomas Peters, 61, of Jonesboro, Ark., died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1992, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
Peters was a professor at Southeast Missouri State University from 1957-65, and then was professor at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro from 1965 until retiring in May.
He was born Nov. 24, 1930, at Poplar Bluff. He received a bachelor of science degree at Southeast University in 1952, master of education degree in 1953, and doctorate degree in 1960 from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
While in Cape Girardeau he also was supervisor for Missouri State Department of Education.
During his tenure at Arkansas State he was instrumental in setting up the master's degree in guidance, the rehabilitation program, and the Northeast Arkansas Counselors Association.
Peters was a member of several counselor and education associations. He was listed in the International Who's Who in Education, Who's Who in Child Development Professionals, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Helen Lichtenegger; a daughter, Jennifer Dunlap of Truman, Ark.; two sons, Greg Peters of Greensboro, N.C., Doug Peters of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Carita Roach of Columbia, and three grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Jonesboro. The Revs. Fred Haustein and Ed McDonald will officiate, with burial in City Cemetery at Poplar Bluff.
Friends may call at Farmers Union Funeral Home in Jonesboro from 6-8 p.m. today.
