CAIRO, Ill. -- George T. Hawes, 94, of Cairo, died Tuesday, April 28, 1992, at the VA Medical Center in Marion.
Hawes was a retired sexton of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and oldest member of Cairo VFW Post 2649. He was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include a son, David Hawes of Reidland, Ky.; a daughter, Mary Titus of Yarnell, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Bourland of Cairo; a brother, Roy Hawes of Louisville, Ky.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Mabel Hawes in 1963, and Capitola Hawes in 1981.
Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Church. The Rev. Jerome Fortenberry will officiate, with burial in the U.S. National Cemetery in Mound City.
Friends may call at Barkett Funeral Chapel in Cairo from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday.
