CHARLESTON -- George Powell, 79, of Charleston, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born June 27, 1920, at Alfalfa Center in Mississippi County, son of George Franklin and Minnie Carman Powell. He married Lorene Manker on Jan. 27, 1947.
Powell had lived in Mississippi his entire life, where he was co-owner of the Griffin-Powell Garage until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, VFW Post No. 4294 and a veteran of World War Two.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Powell of Charleston; a daughter, Joanne Estes of Humbolt, Tenn.; a sister, Edna Willa of Jackson; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston at 11 a.m. today. The Rev. Gerald Brown will officiate, with burial at Calvary Cemetery.
