Gene Windeknecht, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, March 11, 2024, at Lutheran Home, under hospice care.

He was born Dec. 17, 1939, to Oda and Norma Windeknecht in Egypt Mills. He and Jo Donna Rich were married June 14, 1964.

Gene worked at Erbacher Materials Inc. for 38 years as an office manager.

He graduated from College High in 1957 and then graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1961.

Gene was active in his church and he was a Sunday school superintendent and also treasurer of the church for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Donna Windeknecht; daughter, Tara (Mike) Fugina; son, Michael (Tammy) Windeknecht; three grandchildren, Jordan (Barbie) Windeknecht, Valerie and Hannah Windeknecht; and brother, Burton (Mary Lee) Windeknecht.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his stepfather, Leo Deimund.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Egypt Mills.

Funeral will follow at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at the church, with the Vicar Rick Ronsick officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau.

Memorial contributions may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church of Egypt Mills and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The family wants to thank all who cared for Gene, especially Lutheran Home Hospice.
