DELTA, Mo. -- Garnett Elwood "Butch" Moore, 68, of Delta died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at 8 p.m. at his home, with his family by his side.
He became the fifth member of his family to suffer with amyotropic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He had suffered from ALS for the past year.
He was born Sept. 23, 1932, near Delta, son of Charles and Anna Bock Moore. He married the former Joyce Slinkard Oct. 5, 1957.
Moore was a graduate of Delta High School. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chaffee, Mo., and treasurer of the Sunday School 16 years, and member of American Legion Post 63 in Cape Girardeau.
He had worked at Montgomery Ward in Cape Girardeau, Seabaugh Ford in Jackson, Mo., and was parts manager at Heuer and Sons Implement Co. in Cape Girardeau from 1966 until retiring in 1995.
He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 6, 1953, to Feb. 4, 1955.
Moore won a trip to Hawaii in 1986, which he and his wife enjoyed. He was an avid gardener, often giving produce away to neighbors. He enjoyed collecting antique miniature tractors, especially models of which he had owned.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; three sons, Stanley B. Moore, Walter M. Moore, Roger D. Moore, all of Delta; a daughter, Rebecca E. Smith of Kirksville, Mo.; two grandsons, Daniel L. Moore and Zachary B. Moore of Delta; four brothers, Leonard F. Moore, Charles A. Moore, Everett Moore, all of Cape Girardeau, and George W. Moore of San Antonio, Texas.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee after 4 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chaffee, with the Rev. Wayne Schwiesow officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery in Cape Girardeau, with military rites by American Legion Post 63.
