Fred Louis Snider, 72, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at his home.

He was born Oct. 10, 1938, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Woodrow Wilson and Norma Eastwood Snider. He and Darla Kay Gatewood were married March 10, 1963, in Piggott, Ark.

Fred graduated from Puxico High School in 1956, Southeast Missouri State University in 1960 and University of Missouri in 1968 with a Ph.D.

He worked briefly for the Bureau of Statistics in Washington, D.C., after graduation from Southeast. He taught math at Bismarck, Mo., for one semester and then taught math at Cape Girardeau public schools until 1965. After receiving a Ph.D. in psychology, he was an assistant professor of psychology at Western Illinois University in Macomb from August 1968 through May 1969.

He began teaching psychology at Southeast in the summer of 1969, where he served as chairperson of the psychology department from 1976 to 1980. He was registrar at Southeast from 1984 to 1986, dean of admissions and records from 1987 to 1991, assistant vice president for enrollment development from 1992 to 1995, and director of institutional research from 1995 to 1998, after which he retired.

After retirement he and Darla enjoyed traveling to Europe, Hawaii, the Maritime provinces, Alaska and other sites in the United States.

Fred was a member of Abbey Road Christian Church, where he served many years as an elder and treasurer. He was named a life elder on Oct. 25, 2009.

Survivors include his wife, Darla Snider of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Michelle Dobsch and husband Kevin of Washington, Mo., Emily Goode and husband Travis of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Ruth Lee George and husband Bob of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, Hannah and Aaron Dobsch, and Caleb and Quentin Goode.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and a sister, JoAnn Snider Shelton.

Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Rodger Kiepe officiating. Interment will be private at Cape County Memorial Park.
