CAIRO, Ill. -- Fred Newell, 71, of Cairo, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1992, at Southwest Hospital in Little Rock, Ark.
He was born June 26, 1920, in Mounds, son of Fred and Eva Jordan Newell.
Newell was a first sergeant and administrative technician with Illinois National Guard 1244th Transportation Co. here, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Illinois Guard Association. Newell served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Catherine; two sons, Ronald Newell of Cairo, Stephen Newell of Terrell, Texas; two sisters, Virginia Claxton of Newton, and Ella Shepherd of Mounds.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Barkett Funeral Chapel. The Revs. Kenneth Clarke and Jerome Fortenberry and Deacon Arthur Clarke will officiate, with burial in Mound City National Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. Sunday.
