Fred Robert Lee Lewallen, 81, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in Cape Girardeau. He was born in Anniston, Mo., Sept. 9, 1925. His family moved to Chaffee, Mo., in 1935. His late father, Fred Lee Lewallen, was superintendent of schools in Chaffee from 1935 to 1962, and his late mother, Chilton Ruth Lewallen, was a grade school teacher until 1962...

Fred Robert Lee Lewallen, 81, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in Cape Girardeau.

He was born in Anniston, Mo., Sept. 9, 1925. His family moved to Chaffee, Mo., in 1935. His late father, Fred Lee Lewallen, was superintendent of schools in Chaffee from 1935 to 1962, and his late mother, Chilton Ruth Lewallen, was a grade school teacher until 1962.

The Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Council campground, Camp Lewallen, was named after the Lewallen family.

Fred Robert Lee Lewallen graduated from Chaffee High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard Sept. 8, 1943, and was discharged as a sonarman 3rd Class April 26, 1946.

He was a graduate of the University of Missouri. He lived in California most of his adult life, working for several agencies of the federal government, and retired from the U.S. Navy Post Graduate School Computer Department in Monterrey, Calif., April 16, 1994. He took courses at Ohio State University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Southeast Missouri State University.

Mr. Lewallen is survived by cousins, Mary Richards of Phelan, Calif., James Estes of Chicago, Jerry Estes of Austin, Texas, June Holmes Schearer of Hannibal, Mo., and Mary Holmes Riddle of Williamsville, Mo.

He will be missed particularly by friends at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, and acquaintances in Missouri and California.

There is no visitation or funeral service.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
