SIKESTON -- Fred E. Matthews Sr., 88, of Sikeston, died Tuesday, June 29, 1993, at Missouri Delta Medical Center. He was born March 31, 1905, at Sikeston, son of John A. and Annie Hatcher Matthews. He and Helen Copeland were married Feb. 19, 1938. Matthews had owned and operated Foster-Matthews Wholesale Grocery, and later was employed by McKnight-Keaton Grocery. SIKESTON -- Fred E. Matthews Sr., 88, of Sikeston, died Tuesday, June 29, 1993, at Missouri Delta Medical Center.

He was born March 31, 1905, at Sikeston, son of John A. and Annie Hatcher Matthews. He and Helen Copeland were married Feb. 19, 1938.

Matthews had owned and operated Foster-Matthews Wholesale Grocery, and later was employed by McKnight-Keaton Grocery. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Fred Matthews Jr. of Carlsbad, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Schnittger of Allentown, Pa.; a sister, Lena Matthews of Sikeston, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Matthews officiating.

Friends may call at Ponder Funeral Home from 1-2 p.m. Thursday.
