Frances G. Underwood, 87, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Chateau Girardeau. She was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Stoddard County, daughter of Roscoe C. and Alice Hollis Gillespie. She and John M. Underwood were married Oct. 24, 1929. Formerly of Bloomfield, she had lived in Stoddard County most of her life. She was a former teacher and helped on the farm. She was a member of P.E.O., Retired Teachers Association, Historical Society, and an extension club...

Frances G. Underwood, 87, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Chateau Girardeau.

She was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Stoddard County, daughter of Roscoe C. and Alice Hollis Gillespie. She and John M. Underwood were married Oct. 24, 1929.

Formerly of Bloomfield, she had lived in Stoddard County most of her life. She was a former teacher and helped on the farm. She was a member of P.E.O., Retired Teachers Association, Historical Society, and an extension club.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Nelda Simpson of Mt. Carmel, Ill., Alice Cofman of Leominster, Mass.; five sons, John Underwood Jr. of Jefferson City, James Underwood of Columbia, Dennis Underwood of Cape Girardeau, Doyle Underwood of Chesterfield, and Brian Underwood of St. Louis.

Also surviving are three sisters, Jenny Kennedy of Camden, Ark., Betsy Morrison of Little Rock, Ark., Sybil Cole of Magnolia, Ark.; a brother, R.C. Gillespie of Casper, Wyo.; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Friends may call at Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield from 5-8 p.m. Saturday.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bloomfield Cemetery.
