Evelyn Porter, 85, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Southeast Hospital.
She was born March 4, 1928, at Neelys Landing, to Israel Paul and Lilly Raye Porter. She was married at an early age to William Harrison Whitner. He passed away in 2001.
Evelyn had worked as a housekeeper in several hotels, motels and hospitals, and had also worked at the Airline Cafe. She was a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She was a foster parent in the Cape Girardeau area more than 20 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Candy Jo Mosley of Cape Girardeau; two sons, a minister, Benjamin Porter of Washington, D.C., and Derek Oakes of West Plains, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents; husband; two sisters, Ruth Moore and Bessie Mae Lattin; and three brothers, Cletus, Ozell and Willie Porter.
Visitation will be from noon to service time Saturday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Benjamin Porter and Joseph G. Cotton Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.
