Ernest V. Gibbons, 92, of Cobden, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
He was born July 20, 1913, in Alto Pass, Ill., son of Thomas Frederick and Olive Jane McMillan Gibbons. He and Mildred Louis Newberry were married on Aug. 2, 1945, in Jonesboro.
Gibbons was of the Baptist faith, a lifelong farmer, a Cobden School custodian and a part-time mail carrier. He was a staff Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of the VFW in Anna, Ill., the Cobden American Legion Post 259 and the Jonesboro Odd Fellows.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Gibbons of Cobden; two daughters, Judith Pitts of Wolf Lake and Sharon Dover of Anna; a son, Danny Gibbons of Cobden; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son and three sisters.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and on Tuesday until the funeral time at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Fear officiating. Interment will be in Casper Cemetery with military honors at the grave by the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of the VFW in Anna.
