Emma C. Wessel Smith, 93, of Boulder, Colo., formerly of Cape Girardeau County, passed away and went to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, July 5, 2008, at the Hospice of Boulder County Care Center in Louisville, Colo. She was born July 14, 1914, in Gordonville, the last of nine children, daughter of the late William Henry and Emma Sievers Wessel. She and Robert Lee Smith were married in 1938 in Bonne Terre, Mo. Emma C. Wessel Smith, 93, of Boulder, Colo., formerly of Cape Girardeau County, passed away and went to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, July 5, 2008, at the Hospice of Boulder County Care Center in Louisville, Colo.

She was born July 14, 1914, in Gordonville, the last of nine children, daughter of the late William Henry and Emma Sievers Wessel. She and Robert Lee Smith were married in 1938 in Bonne Terre, Mo. He passed away Nov. 28, 2002.

Emma completed 12 grades of education in parochial and Cape Girardeau County public schools. She then attended Rubicam Business College in St. Louis. Emma, as a working housewife, held secretarial and office managerial positions at the University of Missouri-Columbia and Rolla campuses as well as other employers for over 45 years.

She was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran churches in Gordonville, Centralia, Mo., and Columbia, Mo., and in Boulder.

Loving survivors include two daughters, Joyce C. Gibson of Fayette, Mo., Karen L. Apprill of Boulder; a son, Richard L. Smith of Holland, Mich.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to service time Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Wayne Schwiesow officiating. Interment will follow in Zion Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Cemetery in Gordonville.

McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson is in charge of arrangements.
