Emil Exler, 71 years of age of Cape Girardeau, Mo., passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born Aug. 16, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, the son of the late Benjamin and Clara Niedling Exler. On Jan. 27, 1951, he married the former Juanita Hengst in Cape Girardeau.
Mr. Exler was self-employed, engaging in farming, excavating and trucking in the Cape Girardeau County area, and also worked at Schneider Equipment Co. from 1961 to 1964.
He was one of the first board members of East County Fire District, a charter member of the Egypt Mills Antique Tractor Club and played Santa Claus for the neighborhood in the Egypt Mills area.
He was a member of Scriptural Lutheran Church and was an elder at the church.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Exler of Cape Girardeau; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Rhonda Exler of Cape Girardeau and Tim and Deena Exler of Jackson; a daughter-in-law, Connie Exler of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, Stephanie and Jordan Exler of Cape Girardeau and Katelyn and Seth Exler of Cape Girardeau; three sisters, Gertrude L. Cotner of Cape Girardeau, Cecil Fay Dunn of Sulphur, Ky., and Viola M. Schlegel of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Ralph Exler of Cape Girardeau; and his mother-in-law, Katy Thiele of Cape Girardeau.
He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lee Exler, on Oct. 30, 1995, and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at Scriptural Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Henry Gieschen and Richard Tragasz officiating.
Burial will be in Scriptural Lutheran Church Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Scriptural Lutheran Church Hymnal Fund.
