Elwood Chester "Bud" Ellis, 96, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, at Southeast Hospital.

He was born Oct. 2, 1926, in Cape Girardeau to Oren and Mae Simmons Ellis. Elwood and Laverne Atchison were married July 2, 1949, in Cape Girardeau.

He served in the U.S. Army. He worked for Harris Motor Car Co. and then Harris Truck and Trailer for more than 30 years.

Elwood loved watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and in his later years he enjoyed gardening and spending time in his garage.

He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and later Lynwood Baptist Church. Elwood served as deacon, music director, Sunday school teacher and trustee.

Survivors include a son, Rick (Darlene) Ellis of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two daughters, Sherry Mayo of Jackson and Cathy White of Ballwin, Missouri; two brothers, the Rev. Gene Ellis of Casey, Illinois, and Oren (Karen) Ellis Jr. of Perryville, Missouri; two sisters, Shirley Ellis of Cape Girardeau and Judy (Toby) Davis of Louisville, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Melissa (Michael) Hampton of Ballwin and Gloria (Darrin) Sauerbrunn of Jackson; six great-grandchildren, Brenna, Murphy, Hannah and Joseph Hampton, and Jacob and Josey Sauerbrunn; and several nieces and nephews.

Elwood was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Ellis; and sister, Shirlene Riley.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral will follow at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating. Burial will be at Lorimier Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society and Feed My Starving Children.
