Elvis O. Smothers, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 16, 1916, in Swinton, Mo., son of Orble and Minnie Mann Smothers. He and Minnie Faye Hagood were married on April 7, 1945, in St. Louis and she survives of the home.

Smothers was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was a retired barber and a member of the General Baptist Church in Jackson and the Bloomfield Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Heise and Judy Rhymer, both of Cape Girardeau; one brother, John Smothers of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Helen Stewart of Bloomfield, Mo., and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Luther Rhodes officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Bell City.
