Elmer A. Schearf, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, where he was surrounded by his beloved family.
He was born Oct. 12, 1931, in Kankakee, Illinois, son of Phillip and Myrtle Schearf. He and Jewel "Judy" Campbell were married July 4, 1953, in Delta.
Elmer attended Delta High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948-1951, where he was part of the Chosin Reservoir battle and was a purple heart recipient. Anyone that knew Elmer knows how he loved talking about his service to his country. After his time in service, Elmer worked for Western Electric (ATT) and in construction and telecommunications.
He was a faithful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an ordained deacon at Fellowship Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, where he was an active member at the time of his death. Elmer was also an active member in the VFW, a former color guard and a member of the Fraternity of Honor, The Chosin Few.
Elmer had a knack for making people laugh and will always be remembered for his funny jokes, sayings and shenanigans as well as his righteous dedication to family and Christ.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jewel "Judy" Schearf; daughter, Debra (Wayland) Stacy of Marble Hill, Missouri; son, Bryan (Betty) Schearf of Oak Point, Texas; three grandchildren, Laura (Jamion) Shelton, Lisa (Chuck) Isom and C.W. (Jessica) Stacy; great-grandchildren, Makala Sites, Chelsie Fox, Malori Shelton, Travis Fox, Maura Shelton, Wayland Stacy, Lydia Isom and Brendon Stacy; brother, Alvin (Maybell) Schearf; sisters-in-law, Enid Schearf, Oneida Schearf and Virginia Schearf; brother-in-law, Wesley (Carolyn) Campbell; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father- and mother-in-law, Chester and Norma Campbell; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Stacy; brothers, Levis, Lloyd, Eugene and Donny Schearf; sister, Mildred Campbell; brother-in-law, Lynule Campbell; and sister-in-law, Rachel Schearf.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral service will follow at noon Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for memorial donations to be made to Fellowship Baptist Church, 430 Koch Ave., Cape Girardeau, MO 63701.
