JACKSON -- Ellis Crain, 94, of Jackson died Saturday, Sept. 30, 1995, at his home.
He was born Dec. 11, 1900, in Oak Ridge, the son of Dayton L. and Prishia Rhein Crain. On Oct. 11, 1922, he married Irene S. Hopkins.
He was deputy Cape Girardeau County assessor for 30 years and Jackson city assessor for 25 years. He also was a U.S. Census enumator from 1920 to 1925 and the crew leader of the U.S. Farm Census of 1955. He served as an ASCS field reporter, and he was a member of the county committee for five years, two as chairman. He was a member of the Farm Bureau board and a director of the Cape County Livestock Shipping Association.
He was a member of Old Salem Methodist Church from 1912 to 1968, where he served as a member and chairman of the church board and taught Sunday school for more than 45 years. Since 1968, he was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson, where he also served on the church board and taught a men's school class.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Clemon C. Crain of Cape Girardeau and Carlton Crain of Jackson; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister a one grandson.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. today at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson, where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
