Elizabeth "Betty" Umfleet, 82, formerly of Fredericktown, Mo., passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in Cape Girardeau, with family at her side.
She was born Oct. 21, 1931, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Felix and Rady Ellis. She married Charles Umfleet Jr. on March 24, 1951, in Pocahontas, Ark. He preceded her in death Aug. 2, 2009.
Betty retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. after 33 years of service. She grew up in Detroit and at the age of 17 moved to Fredericktown, where she graduated from Fredericktown High School. She met and married Charley Umfleet. They had three children.
She was an active member many years at First Presbyterian Church of Fredericktown. She also was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution and Madison County Historical Society. Betty had many interests, including photography, crafts, bridge club and volunteering at many organizations.
Survivors include three children, Karen (Brian) Frisch and Maureen (Ed) Heuss
of Washington state and a son, Dr. Jeffrey (Christine) Umfleet of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren, Jaron, Jara and Alec; five sisters and three brothers and their families; and many nieces, nephews and great friends.
Betty is remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed life and so many great times spent with family and special friends.
Visitation will be from noon to service time Monday at Follis and Sons Funeral Home in Fredericktown.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Historical Society and designated to Franklin Street Cemetery Restoration Fund.
