Elizabeth Schoen

Vera Elizabeth Schoen, 95, of Jackson died Monday, June 20, 2005, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girar-deau.

She was born Jan. 27, 1910, at Oak Ridge, daughter of Theo-dore Emanuel and Annette Willer Kasten. She and Gilbert H. Schoen were married June 12, 1936. He died Nov. 11, 1990.

Mrs. Schoen attended Oak Ridge High School, graduated from Central High School, and received a bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University.

She taught school at Pocahontas, Cape Girardeau, and retired as a math teacher at Jackson in 1974. She was reportedly the first woman to serve on the Jackson School Board.

Mrs. Schoen was a member of First Baptist Church, taught Sunday school more than 60 years, sang in the choir, played the organ, and was active in WMU. She served on the Community Chest and had been a Girl Scout leader. She was a charter member of Thursday Literary Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary (Bob) Stanley and Martha (Edgar) Fiehler of Jackson; a brother, Ralph Kasten of Jackson; two sisters, Helen Sheets of Cape Girardeau, Lenore Nye of Rochelle, Ill.; two grandchildren, Susan Collyer of Atlanta, Ga., Dan Trobee of Lewes, Del.; two great-grandchildren, Dario and Sarah Trobee.

Friends may call at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

A private graveside service will be held Saturday morning at Russell Heights Cemetery, followed by a celebration service at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Carter Frey will officiate.
