Elberta Laverne Schaefer, 84, died Saturday, May 17, 1997.

She was born July 11, 1912 in East Prairie, daughter of Chester and Addie Speck Lucas. She and Herman Schaefer were married Jan. 28, 1937 in Cairo, Ill. He survives.

Schaefer was a homemaker and worked at Southeast Missouri State University for a short period of time. She moved to Cape Girardeau from Illmo in 1937. She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, is a Past Matron of St. Marks OES #167 of the Eastern Star, a member of the Southeast Hospital Auxiliary, Naomi Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church and Amaranth White Shrine.

Survivors include a daughter, Dixie Eifert of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Willis Lucas of E. Alton, Ill., and Jack Tidwell of Bella Vista, Ark.; a sister, Ruth Rudder of Dothan, Ala.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. An Order of the Eastern Star Service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the chapel.

Funeral service will be at the chapel at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. S.S. Borum officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
