Edwin Andrew Lampitt, 81, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Heartland Medical Center in Sebring, Fla.

He was born July 30, 1919, in Pekin, Ill., son of Benjamin E. and Esther Hintz Lampitt. He and Gwenda Hibberd were married Nov. 15, 1942, in Ursa, Ill.

Lampitt graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor of science degree in engineering. During World War II he designed military aircraft at McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis.

In 1947 he went to Pekin and worked for 16 years at his father's construction company. He then went to work for American Car and Foundry Co., designing railroad cars and other industrial products.

He later started Lampitt and Associates, a structural design company in St. Charles, Mo. He then became a partner in Engineers Collaborative for a number of years, then restarted Lampitt Engineering and retired in 1998.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and University of Illinois Alumni Association.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dr. Ed Lampitt of Piedmont, Mo., Thomas B. Lampitt of Asheville, N.C.; two daughters, Gwen Bennett and Patricia Stahly of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Anna Marie Crebs of Winter Haven, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call at the home of Dr. Michael Bennett, 2553 Wildhorse Trail, from 6-8 p.m. today.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Douglas C. Breite officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Michael Bennett, Dr. Randall Stahly, Dr. Edwin Lampitt, Thomas Lampitt Jr., Timothy Lampitt, Ross Andrew Bennett, Samuel Stahly, Patrick Franklin and Scott Dudley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
