Edwin J. Hilpert, 78, of 1943 Briarwood died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1993, at his home.
He was born on June 24, 1914 in Cape Girardeau, son of Martin E. and Dorothea Doering Hilpert.
On June 18, 1941, he married June Mabrey in Jackson. She survives.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier and supervisor at the Cape Girardeau Post Office, retiring in 1976.
He was a charter member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, a lifelong member of the choir, and was Sunday school superintendent of the church.
He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, and president of the Cape Girardeau Little League from 1960-1963. He was also active in the Southeast Missouri Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as the council's training chairman, commissioner, and on the executive board. He also served as scoutmaster of Troop 21.
He received a number of Scouting awards, including the Scoutmaster's Key Award, the Order of the Arrow, Shawnee District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver, which is the highest council award to a volunteer leader. He served on several council Wood Badge training staffs.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army's postal service. He was a member of VFW Post 3838.
Surviving, besides his wife, are one son, John M. Hilpert of Vermillion, S.D.; one daughter, Sally L. Holt of Bernie; three sisters, Edna Grebing, Alma Huber and Helen Moore, all of Cape Girardeau; and five grandchildren.
Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church with the Rev. Louis Launhardt officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. today.
