CAIRO, Ill. -- Edwin L. Burnley, 88 of Cairo, formerly of Ingleside, Ky., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at his home. He was born Feb. 15, 1918, at Kevil, Ky., son of William T. and Edwina Anderson Burnley. He was a retired farmer. Burnley was a member of the Kevil United Methodist Church and Ducks Unlimited. ...

CAIRO, Ill. -- Edwin L. Burnley, 88 of Cairo, formerly of Ingleside, Ky., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at his home.

He was born Feb. 15, 1918, at Kevil, Ky., son of William T. and Edwina Anderson Burnley.

He was a retired farmer. Burnley was a member of the Kevil United Methodist Church and Ducks Unlimited. He served on the Ballard County Selective Service Board and the Ballard County Fair Board and was adjutant of American Legion Post 3 in LaCenter, Ky. Burnley was a Kentucky colonel and was awarded the Centennial Farm Award by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps where he received the Air Medal for meritorious service in combat.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth of Cairo; a daughter, Betty Barkett of Cairo; a son, Ben Burnley of Henderson, Ky.; a sister, Bonita Abernathy of Kevil; three brothers, Richard Burnley of Kevil, Robert Burnley of Danville, Ky., Van Burnley of Barlow; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a sister and brother.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home in LaCenter.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Dr. Larry L. Potts officiating.

Interment will be in Woodville Cemetery, with military honors.

Jones Funeral Home in LaCenter and Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo are in charge of arrangements.
