Dr. Thomas Lovinggood Sr.

Dr. Thomas Allen Lovinggood Sr., 88, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Chateau Girardeau Health Center in Cape Girardeau.

Dr. Lovinggood was born Jan. 27, 1924, in Memphis, Tenn., to Webster Perry and Eva May O'Brien Lovinggood. He met his beloved wife Nancy E. Bridges Lovinggood after college, and they were married Nov. 25, 1950, in Philadelphia, Miss. She preceded him in death in 2005.

Dr. Lovinggood attended the University of Memphis, then went on to the University of Tennessee Medical School, graduating in 1946.

He served in the Navy during World War II and the Army Medical Corps during the Korean War.

He was the first pathologist in Cape Girardeau, and began his practice in 1953, working at both Southeast Hospital, and Saint Francis Hospital. He established the Lovinggood Pathology Laboratory.

Thomas was a member and past president of the Cape Girardeau County Medical Society. He was a member of the Missouri State Medical Association, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, College of American Pathologists and the American Medical Association. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church. After retiring in 1987, he enjoyed traveling with Nancy, playing golf, playing bridge and spending time with his grandchildren. Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a respected member of the medical community. He will be dearly missed by all.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas A. (Marla) Lovinggood Jr. of Lee's Summit, Mo., James "Perry" (Molly) Lovinggood of St. Louis and Robert "Bobby" (George-Ann) Lovinggood New Orleans; two daughters, Susan (Joel) Martin of Franklin, Mass., and Barbara (Robert) Miller of Lee's Summit; 11 grandchildren, Adam (Aimee) Arnold, Charlie Hirst, Benjamin Martin, Anthony Martin, John Tyler Lovinggood, James Lovinggood, Elizabeth Lovinggood, Lucy Lovinggood, Hillary Lovinggood, Stuart Lovinggood and Michael Miller; three great-grandchildren, Cash Arnold, Callum Arnold and Dylan Hirst; a sister-in-law, Betty Harrison of Philadelphia, Miss.; three nieces, Joy (Robert) Straw of Memphis, Kathy Harrison and Kimberly Bridges Neal; three nephews, R.V. (Toya) Lovinggood of Memphis, Pat Harrison and David Bridges; and a cousin, Weldon (Ann) Shafer.

Lovinggood was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one nephew.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be at noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

A private burial will follow at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
