DeRIDDER, La. -- Dr. Paul Richard Story, 74, of DeRidder died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder. He was born June 1, 1933, in Cape Gir-ardeau, son of C. Paul and Elsie McClendon Story. He married Betty Jo Whidden. Story was a 1951 graduate of the former College High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Southeast Missouri State University in 1955 and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1959 with a major in chemistry...

DeRIDDER, La. -- Dr. Paul Richard Story, 74, of DeRidder died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder.

He was born June 1, 1933, in Cape Gir-ardeau, son of C. Paul and Elsie McClendon Story. He married Betty Jo Whidden.

Story was a 1951 graduate of the former College High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Southeast Missouri State University in 1955 and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1959 with a major in chemistry.

After graduation he joined Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey as an independent researcher. He joined the University of Georgia in 1966 and became chairman of the chemistry department.

He founded Story Chemical Corp. in Athens, Ga., in 1966, and continued as part-time professor at the university.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Laura Gabriel and Marilyn Adams of Athens; a son, Brian Hall of Athens; his mother, Elsie Story of Greenville, Ala.; two sisters, Sherry Carroll of Orange Beach, Ala., April McGough of Honoraville, Ala.; a brother, Jon Story of Cape Girardeau; two stepsons, Eddie Whidden of DeRidder, Dale Whidden of Lafayette, La.; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The funeral was held Oct. 23 in DeRidder, with Dr. Jim Eaves officiating. Burial was in Newlin Cemetery in Singer, La.

Chaddick Funeral Home in DeRidder was in charge of arrangements.
