Jon Patrick "Pat" Downey, 73, of Knoxville, Tenn., passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013.
Pat was a graduate of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, playing football five years, lettering three years as a blocking back. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
He received a doctorate degree and was appointed to the staff at Southeast Hospital in August 1971. He went on to serve as medical staff officer from 1977 to 1982, serving during this period as member and chairman of the medical executive committee. Pat served as medical staff president from 1980 to 1982 and past president from 1983 to 1984.
Other committees he served on included credentials committee chairman from 1978 to 1980 and member from 1985 to 1986; nominating committee, chairman from 1983 to 1984 and member from 1985 to 1988; clinical committee, chairman and ex-officer member of all departments from 1976 to 1977; infection control committee, chairman in 1975 and member from 1973 to 1975; medical records and utilization committee, member from 1973 to 1975; coronary care committee in 1975; tissue and blood committee in 1975; and cardiac rehab from 1978 to 1980.
Pat had a mini-residence in occupational medicine and was a longtime member of American Family Physicians Association. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Lenoir City, Tenn., and Argentina 1500 Dove Club.
He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Ronald Downey; mother, Francis Early Downey; and brother, Ronald Downey.
Survivors include his wife, Leslie Downey; a son, Drew Downey; a daughter, Julie Downey Page; two grandchildren, Nathan and Emily Page, all of Knoxville; a brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Kathy Downey; a nephew, Chase Downey and wife Jenni of Germantown, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Nina Downey; a nephew, Ron Downey and wife Heather; a cousin, Normandie Shirley, all of Birmingham, Ala.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Emma Ruth Wright; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kyle and Patty Wright; sister-in-law, LeeAnn Wright, all of Knoxville; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bill and Kay Stokely.
A celebration of Pat's life will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church, 174 Hickory Creek Road, Lenoir City, with the Rev. Micah Nicolaus officiating.
A reception will follow the service at the church.
