Dr. James Albert Buckenmyer, 89, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Saint Francis Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 11, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio, to Albert John and Marcia Philominea Tremmel Buckenmyer. He attended Central Catholic High School in Toledo, graduating in 1950. He subsequently graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1954, with a degree in business.
James proudly served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. He attended Washington University in St. Louis in the early 1960s and received his doctor of business administration degree from there in 1970.
James was dean of the College of Business at Southeast Missouri State University for several years and a professor of management there. He helped start Southeast's extension campus and was the first director of the Bootheel Education Center in Malden, Missouri. James was a member/mentor of SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives). He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
He is survived by five children, Marcia B. Freeborg of Jackson, James W. Buckenmyer of Friendsville, Tennessee, Daniel Martin (Terra) Buckenmyer of Jackson, Regina M. Buckenmyer of Cape Girardeau and Jacob A. Buckenmyer of Valencia, California; sister-in-law, Marcia Buckenmyer of Bowling Green, Ohio; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles Allen and John Joseph Buckenmyer.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. Alex Sutachan officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Cemetery in Toledo.
