Dr. Cleo W. Mabrey, 74, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Southeast Missouri Hospital. He was born May 5, 1924, at Kime, son of John and Carrie Bounds Mabrey. Dr. Cleo W. Mabrey, 74, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born May 5, 1924, at Kime, son of John and Carrie Bounds Mabrey. He and Jean Stevenson were married in 1946 at Lowndes.

Mabrey received his undergraduate degree from Southeast Missouri State University, and master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He was a business education teacher at Greenville Public Schools, was high school principal at Hillsboro from 1952-62, and became the first director of student teaching at Southeast University in 1962. He retired in 1990.

Mabrey was president of Southeast Hospital Foundation two years. He was a member of Downtown Rotary Club and past president of the club and past district governor.

He was a member and past commander of VFW Post 3838; past president of Cape Shrine Club; and held memberships in Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Order of Eastern Star.

A member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Mabrey was a past member of Commission on Education, and adult Sunday School superintendent.

Mabrey received the Exchange Club Golden Deeds Award March 1, 1983. He served on the board and was a past president of Cape Senior Center. He served on the legislative committee of Retired Teachers Association, was currently a member of Cape Girardeau County Parks Commission, and was a past member of Cape Girardeau Planning and Zoning Commission.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He served in Italy, Germany, Africa, Austria, and participated in the D-Day invasion in France.

Survivors include his wife; a brother, John Mabrey of St. Louis; and a sister, Virginia Shoemake of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. today.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Centenary Church, with Dr. Clayton Smith officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Mausoleum, with military rites by VFW Post 3838.
