Douglas Allen Burgett, 55, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, May 29, 2014, after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 19, 1958, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Douglas received a certificate of completion May 29, 1978, from State School No. 11 for the severely handicapped in Cape Girardeau. He was employed by VIP Industries from 1978 to 1995. Douglas Allen Burgett, 55, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, May 29, 2014, after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 19, 1958, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Douglas received a certificate of completion May 29, 1978, from State School No. 11 for the severely handicapped in Cape Girardeau. He was employed by VIP Industries from 1978 to 1995. He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church since 1974 and assisted his best friend, James Murray, with operating the audio/visual equipment.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois M. Burgett.

Survivors include his father, George W. Burgett of Cape Girardeau; a sister and brother-in-law, Terri Jo and Bill Stockman of Dayton, Ohio; two nephews, Brent Stockman of Washington, D.C., and Brock Stockman of Navarre, Florida; and numerous cousins.

Douglas was cherished by everyone who met him because of his sense of humor and personal connection. He loved every moment of his shortened life, even the smallest ones.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association or the Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC).
