Dorothy Doherty

Dorothy Ashley Huff Doherty, the wife of Dr. William T. Doherty, formerly of Cape Girardeau, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, Md.

She was born July 2, 1918, at The Praesidio in San Francisco, Calif., daughter of Col. Sargent Prentiss Huff of Woodville, Miss., and the former Dorothy Ashley Holbrook of Washington, D.C.

Dorothy graduated in 1935 from Coronado, Calif., High School and in 1939 from the University of Maryland where she majored in home economics and was president of Delta Delta Delta sorority.

Subsequently, she worked as a dietitian at the tea rooms of the former Woodward and Lothrop Department Store in Washington, D.C., and at the National Park Seminary, formerly a girls school in Forest Glen, Md.

On March 17, 1941, she married Victor S. Zienowicz of the Army Air Corps at Maxwell Field, Ala. She was widowed when Maj. Zienowicz (missing in action over France a year earlier) was declared dead Nov. 23, 1943.

She and Dr. Doherty were married Aug. 13, 1947. A history professor, he is the son of William T. Doherty and Kitty Baird Doherty, and the brother of Mrs. John C. (Mary Elizabeth) Magill of Cape Girardeau.

Mrs. Doherty and her family lived in Fulton, Mo., Columbia, Mo., Fayetteville, Ark., Oxford, Miss., Manhattan, Kan., and Morgantown, W.Va. She and her husband moved to Leisure World in Silver Spring, Md., in 1986.

She was a member of the Woman's Club of Chevy Chase, Rossmoor Women's Club, Women's National Democratic Club, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, and tri Delta Alumnae Society.

In addition to her husband of 54 years, and the son of her first marriage, Victor S. Doherty of Somerville, Mass., she is survived by four children: Ashley Doherty Fortenberry of Washington, D.C., Catherine Doherty DeKrey of Northfield, Minn., Julia Doherty Stevens of Reston, Va., William T. Doherty III of Annapolis, Md.; two grandchildren, Dorothy A. Fortenberry of Washington, D.C., William S. DeKrey of Northfield; two sisters, Eleanor (Mrs. Jacob) Feagles of Washington, D.C., and Carolyn (Mrs. James) Teegarden of Oceanview, Del.

Francis J. Collins Funeral Home in Silver Spring was in charge of arrangements.
