ULLIN, Ill. -- Funeral for Doris M. Echols of Ullin will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Crain Funeral Home in Ullin. The Rev. Bill Gholson will officiate. Burial will be in National Cemetery at Mound City, Ill.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. today.
Echols, 76, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at her home.
She was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Cairo, daughter of Carl and Nancy Elizabeth Wright Nelms. She and Maurice "Baldy" Echols were married Jan. 18, 1947.
During World War II Echols worked in Evansville, Ind., helping to make landing craft. She had also worked at Florsheim and Brown Shoe Companies, worked 16 years with Shawnee Development Council Home Companion Program and had been treasurer for the village of Ullin.
She and her husband were chaperones for the Ullin High School senior trip many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Ullin, Ullin Civic Club, and a past president of VFW Auxiliary 8891 in Mounds, Ill.
Survivors include three daughters, Debbie Simmons of Joliet, Ill., Betty Rhomane of Dongola, Ill., Panta Barnes of Cape Girardeau; a son, Paul Echols of Murphysboro, Ill.; a sister, Betty Franklin of Urbandale, Ill.; a brother, Carl "Sonny" Nelms of Paducah, Ky.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister.
