Donald James Berg, 77, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Donald James Berg, 77, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 9, 1935, in St. James, Minn., the youngest child of Clementine and Robert Berg.

Berg graduated from St. James High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor of science and master's degrees from Minnesota State University, and did further graduate study at Washington University and the University of Tennessee.

He served as an officer in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of captain during the Vietnam War era.

Berg was a social worker in Minnesota. He later taught high school social studies in Michigan and sociology at Iowa Western College, and was appointed to teach sociology at Southeast Missouri State University in 1972. He retired with emeritus status from Southeast in 2000, and was then appointed a lecturer in sociology at Fontbonne University and St. Louis University.

He is a biographee in Marquis' "Who's Who in the Midwest." He was president of the board of directors of Cape Civic Center, and a member. He was a member of the Cape Council on Aging. He was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau and St. Xavier College Church in St. Louis. He was a member of many professional organizations of sociology and education.

Survivors include a son, Phillip Berg (Bethanie) of O'Fallon, Mo.; a brother, Robert Berg of Minneapolis; and a sister, Rosemary Quiring of Lake Crystal, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Friends may call from noon to time of service Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. David Hulshof officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by Missouri Honors Team.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
