FLORENCE, Miss. — William "Don" Devore, 81, a longtime resident of Jackson, passed away peacefully at his home in Florence on Friday, July 5, 2024.
Don was born Aug. 13, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, the son of William Loy and Louva Marie Allen Devore. As the second of three children, Don’s work ethic and leadership qualities were evident early on.
Don accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Harmony C.M. Church, which set him on a path to a life deeply rooted in faith. He graduated from Woodland High School and continued his training in the Army National Guard, where he excelled as a diesel mechanic, marksman and drill sergeant.
On Jan. 22, 1964, Don married the love of his life, Norma Jean Whitener. Together, they raised their son, William Don Devore Jr., instilling in him the values of faith and hard work.
Don enjoyed a successful career of more than 40 years at Roland Machinery before his retirement. In his spare time, he took pleasure in making personal repairs and baling hay for his neighbors. He served as a church lay leader until his health declined.
An avid hunter and sports enthusiast, Don was the former president of Cape Girardeau Coon Hunter Association and had a passion for baseball.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, William Loy and Louva Devore; sister, Margaret Glastetter; and beloved wife of 57 years, Norma Jean Devore.

He also leaves behind two brothers-in-law, Henry (Linda) Whitener of Glen Allen and Larry Bollinger of Marble Hill, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and loving friends.
