Devin Lee Eastman, 29, a licensed riverboat pilot of Jackson, passed away Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, on a tugboat while he was on his rest shift on the west bank of the Mississippi River in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.
Devin was born July 9, 1988, in Cape Girardeau to Lea Eastman and Jeffery Overbeck. He attended school in Jackson and was active in junior high sports. He and Kelly Bowman were married Dec. 5, 2009, and three daughters were born to their union.
Devin worked nearly nine years in the marine division of Luhr Bros, Inc., in Cape Girardeau. In 2014 he entered their steersman program, and in 2017 he became a mate pilot. He traveled extensively on western and inland waterways. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 181 in Henderson, Kentucky, and a former member of the Construction Industry Laborers, Local 663 in Kansas City, Missouri.
He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family, and when time allowed, he like to play golf, hunt, ride four-wheelers, camp and listen to music.
To cherish Devin's memory, he leaves his wife of eight years, Kelly Eastman, and their daughters, Laela, Alaina and Leah Eastman, all of Jackson; his mother, Lea Eastman of Cape Girardeau; his father, Jeff Overbeck of Dutchtown; his stepfather, Todd Whaley of Jackson; three siblings, Tyson Whaley of Jackson and Alexis and Audrey Overbeck of Dutchtown; maternal grandmother, Robbie Eastman of Cape Girardeau, maternal grandfather, Horace Eastman of Jackson, paternal grandparents, Clifford and Shirley Overbeck of Dutchtown; step-grandmother, Pam (the late Steve) Whaley of Jackson, and her daughters, Teresa Blessing and Mandy Withrow, both of Perryville, Missouri; maternal uncle, Brent (Sandy) Eastman of Cape Girardeau; maternal aunt, Robyn (Dale) Dickerson of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; paternal uncle, Quentin (Julie) Overbeck of Jackson; his mother-in-law, Ellen (the late Bob) Bowman of Cape Girardeau; two brothers-in-law, Daniel (Jamie) Bowman of Cape Girardeau and Rob (Millie) Bowman of Jackson; a sister-in-law, Tammy (Todd) Peters of Marble Hill, Missouri; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to service time Sunday in Chapel A of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Elijah Allen officiating, followed by a private family gathering.
Graveside committal will be private with interment at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
