David Wayne Matthews, 64, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, at Missouri Veterans Home.
He was born Feb. 22, 1954, in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Walter John and Margaret Lee "Inky" Tichenor Matthews.
David was a 1972 Cape Girardeau Central High School graduate. He then served two years in the Marines. After his military service, he earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Southeast Missouri State University.
He was a substance abuse counselor in Owensboro.
David lived most of his life in Owensboro and Cape Girardeau. His love for his son, family, friends, Kentucky basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball were his favorite things.
Survivors include a son, David Wayne Matthews of Harrisburg, Illinois; three brothers, Walter Lee (Cathy) Matthews of Jackson and Mark (Susan) Matthews and J.B. (Kim) Matthews, both of Cape Girardeau; and a sister, Melody (Jeff) Rafferty of Owensboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be no public service. There will be celebration of life ceremonies in Owensboro and Cape Girardeau at a later date.
