SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Charles T. Scherer, 88, of Mays Landing, N.J., died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Bishop McCarthy Residence in Vineland, N.J.
He was born June 20, 1912, at Fornfelt, Mo., son of Nicholas and Bertha Scherer. He and Marcella Crowley were married Feb. 1, 1947, in Chicago.
Scherer was a crew dispatcher for Chicago Northwestern Railroad 47 years. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society and Third Order of St. Francis. They retired and moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1976.
He served with the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II. He received the Purple Heart.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Koenke of Mays Landing; a son, Hugh Scherer of South Lake, Texas; a sister, Rosalie Valente of Phoenix; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Funeral Mass was held Jan. 20 at St. Vincent's Church in Mays Landing. Graveside service was held in St. Francois Cemetery in Phoenix.
